Reporter:
What made you choose to enter the illustration industry?
Jarom Vogel:
I always liked drawing. At school, he began to contact art classes and studied illustrations at university.

In fact, my first wish was to be a dentist. I could draw and relax in my spare time. But after studying more and more illustration courses, I felt more and more that I might not be suitable for dentist.

The real realization that I wanted to make a living with illustrations was after my trip to New York, where I met mentors on projects. We visited some professional illustrators together, and this unique experience really made me feel like I wanted to make a living with illustration.

Your illustrations are very popular on the Internet. How did you design and make them?

Jarom Vogel:

Thank you very much for your affirmation of my work. I’ve actually played with this illustration a couple of times, but I think it’s the most successful one. It’s very detailed. Besides the parallax effect, I’ve added some small animations at the bottom.

The parallax effect is built primarily through code, and the idea is simpler than it actually looks (though the code part is still a bit more complicated).

There are only a few different layers in the picture, and when you tilt the phone, you move each layer to produce the line of sight. The biggest difference between design and ordinary illustrations is that I have to ensure that each layer has rich details.

As far as color matching is concerned, I also hope to have a scientific and rational approach, but I just do it “at will”. But before drawing this, I was playing with the Sarda legend, so it might have an impact on the theme style.

Can you give your best friends, tell me about your inspiration?
Jarom Vogel:
My inspiration comes from many places. Other arts, music, movies, nature, even old movies can inspire me. I try to make life interesting, so that I can always generate new ideas.

I also like reading, and some of the illustrations are based on the contents of obscure books.

Reporter:
What works and authors do you like now?
Jarom Vogel:
I always liked the works of Jon Klassen and Carson Ellis. And Owen Davey, Bernie Fuchs, Mark Conlan, Rafael Mayani, Warwick Johnson Caldwell, Rune Fisker, Alyssa Scott, Karly Catto, and so on, and I can go on.

I have been chasing new artists, and these artists’ works always inspire me.

How did you come up with the idea of using JS techniques to create a parallax effect in your work?
Jarom Vogel:
The code was self-taught so that I could use it on my own illustration site, and for a while I spent the whole day doing development and design, thinking, combining art with code. I think it’s a very good change because the illustrations are so different from the code that when I’m not thinking or a little frustrated, I try another one, just like a break from thinking. If my project needs two, I will be very excited.

The code of parallax effect is very long and complex. You may feel irritable when you share it. But I think it’s worth learning a little bit of code, and the easiest way is to try to get your project to use it.

What advice can you give to the designer who is studying illustration? You often use iPad Pro. What are the settings and usage habits of Procreate? Is there any other App recommendation besides Procreate?
Jarom Vogel:
Drawing is a very interesting and painstaking job, but it’s worth it. Keep painting and practicing, but don’t put yourself out of it! If you can balance your life, you’ll find that painting isn’t that hard, and you’ll spend a lot of time going out, friends, family, doing interesting things, and then painting them!

I often use Procreate, but recently I also started using Affinity Designer. Sometimes Ps / Ai / Ae will be used. If I needed to use Adobe App on the Mac, I would use Astropad Studio App to turn the iPad Pro into a Mac sketchpad.

This is my workbench, simple and clean, so that I have more energy and focus on illustration.

Thank the designer Jarom Vogel for bringing us this wonderful sharing.
